- Bio: Raymond E. Zirnhelt, 77 of Lisbon, North Dakota, died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009 at Meritcare Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.
- Visitation will be Monday, Nov. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m., with prayer service at 7 p.m., at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Lisbon. The funeral will be Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 10 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon. Arrangements are being handled by Armstrong Funeral Home, Lisbon.
- Ray was born July 24, 1932, at Lisbon, North Dakota to George and Ozeline (Lemieux) Zirnhelt.
- He grew up in rural Lisbon and attended schools in the Lisbon area. After school he farmed for his father. In 1951 he was called to active duty with the U.S. Army and was stationed at Camp Rucker, Alabama during the Korean War. He married Gladys Anderson on March 6, 1951 at Camp Rucker. They returned to Lisbon to farm and raise cattle four miles south of Lisbon. Here they raised their four children, Clair (Ronda) of Grand Forks, Peggy (Darrel) Waloch of Lisbon, Kay Zirnhelt of West Fargo, Debbie (Joe) Billing of Lisbon. They retired from farming in 1981. During their retirement years Ray and Gladys enjoyed traveling and spending their winters in Florida and then Arizona. They also spent many summers at Ridgewood Resort on Long Lake, Detroit Lakes, MN.
- Ray was an active member of the Lisbon American Legion and had served as Post Commander, he served on the board and was a supervisor for the Island Park Township, and he was a member of the Lisbon Eagles Club and a past member of Knight of Columbus.
- On April 9, 1988 Ray married LaVonne (Poss) Zimny at Lisbon, ND. With this union the family was extended with two step children, Jason (Heather) Zimny of East Grand Forks, MN and Shannon (Mike) Stueber of Lisbon, ND. Ray and Bonnie operated the Cattleman's Club of Lisbon, ND. They also enjoyed traveling, spending time at the lake with their extended families and their weekly excursions with their special group of friends.
- After his retirement from farming Ray worked for Rodney & Lyle Olson farm, and for the Ransom County Highway Department. He served one term as a Ransom County Commissioner. He also worked for Farmers Union Coop of Lisbon for the past fifteen years on a part time basis.
- Ray died after a brief and courageous battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis surrounded by his family.
- Ray is survived by his wife Bonnie and their six children, grandchildren: Nikki Daniels, Denny Waloch, Missy Schmidt, Bob Billing, Alicia Sorby, Matt Zirnhelt, Janna Roughead, Tom Zirnhelt, Karlene Lorenz, Cassie Carter, Morgan and Emma Zimny and twelve great grandchildren, and special companion Zoey.
- Also surviving him is one brother Donald (Lorraine) Zirnhelt of Forman, ND, and two sisters, Elaine Elijah of Lisbon, ND and Phyllis Grossinger of Delano MN, and many nieces and nephews.
- He was preceded in death by his wife Gladys, his parents, a brother Benjamin and a baby sister.
