I was 2 1/2 or 3 yrs old. I can remember coming to Sisseton, SD in a two seated buggy & then on a train into Van Hook. I have a picture of the buggy & a big white house, grandparents, Dad & all the brothers, but Lars. Also & Petra.
Uncle Hans bought me a pr. of shoes with buttons up the side, & put me on top of the table & later bought me a three quarter size violin. He said I'd play which I did.
Dad's mother would tease me, & I'd throw shoes at her as she was confined to bed. & Grampa would help her with toilet facilities.
Louise went to _dan's home every day for a half gal. milk. I gathered all the eggs, & brought them in my dress. Broke half of them. Ha!
And another by Lorena
As we came to the farm in Van Hook from Veblen S.D. I was 2 1/2 yrs. old. The farm was mostly pasture, with 48 acres under cultivation. We had lots of cattle & pastured neighbors horses. I milked 4 cows when I was 7 yrs. old. Mother striped them so they wouldn't dry up. We didn't have school close by, so a home made bus was built on wagon wheels by Ole Tolilison. He drove up at least 4 miles till a school was built closer. Then we walked over the hills almost 2 miles one way. We never had snow pants then, only thin stockings. At times it was over 21 below.
Jim would put the crop in, in the spring. & in 1928-29-30 Louise & I harvested it. Louise on the binder with four horses & I shocked. We put up all the hay also. Louise had the mower & I raked. We also hauled all that home. Fence repair was also our job.
During the summer we played horse shoe games, baseball, Uncle Andrew drove us to pick pine & choke cherries. Winter we'd slide on the hills with our home made sleds. Made from 2x4s (runners). In summer too we'd go up in the coulies on side of the hill & make clay things.
In 1931 I went to high school in Van Hook. Never finished because of the depression.
I did house work then, where ever I could get it.
1932 Dec. 5 I married Herman Berends. Feb 9, 1934 Marlene Marie
was born. April 25, 1937 Harold LeRoy - Pokie (All in Minn). Aug 15, 1939 Ella Mae. Herman passed away Feb 21, 1957. I did mostly hotel work, some hospital work, housekeeper at hotel. On Nov. 21, 1954 moved to St. Paul, MN. I retired in 1972. Married Clarence Bastian 1979. He never had a family as he studied to ba a catholic priest, & lived with his sister. Then in later yrs. he tought why should I go around with a bible in my hands, rest of my life. & quit. He worked as a trouble shooter for N.S.P. on transformers.
I forgot to mention that we also raised turkeys for Thanksgiving, Xmas, & New Years, & Dad hired turkey pickers. Thats our folks farm.
